Be your own editor

It can only be a spoiled and rich society, that complains about having too much to choose from. I agree with Barry Schwartz, the author of The Paradox of Choice, that too many options can be paralyzing, as he mentions in the article The Line Between Clarity and Chaos, but his way of thinking at the same time reduce people to helpless victims, who can´t make a sensible decision for themselves.

Recently I went to a much bigger supermarket than my usual one at the corner, and suddenly I had no idea what to buy, because of the endless rows of meat, fruit and vegetables. I got paralyzed and ended up buying less than I do at my regular supermarket. But that was only because I didn´t really knew what I wanted, I didn´t reflect on the choices in front of me.

No protection filter
Sure it can be difficult always to have the energy to be very reflective, but I don´t agree with Barry Schwartz that the internet should have a filter, even though if it´s with our interest at heart. Most things flowing around on the internet are in my opinion not worth spending time on, but the people should be the ones to discover that, there is no need to protect them from it.

The simple living movement, who has been around for some years now, is a clear evidence, that life today is more complicated than ever because of the countless choices we are presented for each day. But at the same time are the options also what make life more exiting and interesting, as long as expectations don´t get so high that no matter what we choose, we always wonder if it was the best decision.
